The attack was planned as a way to strike at the British administration directly, to pressure them into leaving Palestine. Despite Irgun's later claim that warnings were sent, the scale of the destruction and loss of life was devastating. Who were Irgun? They were a militant Zionist group led at the time by Menachem Begin .. who would later become the Prime Minister of Israel. That's something people need to sit with.. leaders who went on to head the state of Israel began their careers organizing violent attacks, not just against the British army, but against civilians too. This was not an isolated incident .. groups like Irgun and the Stern Gang carried out bombings, assassinations, and massacres throughout the 1930s and 40s, as part of their campaign to drive the British out and establish a Jewish state. The King David bombing is one of the clearest examples.
