@jackrein316: This time sounded totally wacky to me, but both me and my husband noticed that this was something we struggled with, and that the claim was that if you don’t restrict it, they’ll eventually learn to restrict it on their own and listen to their own bodies and not feel like they have to eat all the candy whenever it’s available. And I’ve really noticed that it works because even if we buy candy the candy store they’ll forget about the candy or if they see it they’ll have one or two pieces and then say they’re done and save it for later and those are things I can do until my 20s. #parenting
My mom’s only rule with candy and junk was that we had to eat something healthy before we ate whatever we wanted. An apple, handful of grapes, meat and cheese etc then we could have the cookies, chips and candy

Did that with junk food in general once I got out of college and now I can have ice cream in my apartment for weeks if not once at a time and barely touch it.

I buy those dollar boxes of Mike and ikes, junior mints, milk duds Swedish fish, ect. my kids will barely touch them. maybe once a week theyll have a little. my mom never bought sweets and I would eat it all when I had the opportunity, like at a friend's house

Agreed! I grew up with a candy jar on the counter and ice cream after dinner but the actual food we ate was always really healthy. Lots of fruit and vegetables and everything balanced. I grew up liking sweets but not craving them. I definitely remember meeting people in college who lived in more restricted candy homes and they definitely binged on sweets when they got to college.

This is totally what I do. We have totally unlimited access to any and all snacks. They have full ability to eat any granola bar, cookie, treat, whatever.....and they couldn't care less. I grew up in a snackwells, only 2 Vienna fingers for snack family and it made me go HAM when I was at friends houses, etc. And so I agree it totally works!

there was always some sorta candy, cookie, snack cake in the house when I was a kid. fruit was a treat, and we only ate fruit in the summer. I ate fruit every day when I worked at a grocery store.

My kids have 0 candy issues. Never restricted. they can have a few pieces and walk away. We have Halloween/easter candy for long periods of time bc it just doesn’t get eaten 🤷🏻♀️I’ve seen their friends being restricted from it and then saw them go nuts at bday parties on all forms of sugar snacks.

I have a candy bowl of random things and people come over and comment about it in awe…. Well I already ate the fruits and veggies and most of that bowl has been there for a year, plus… it’s still there because I don’t regularly eat it.

Yess. He’s still very still so I hide it, but I’ll randomly offer or alternate saying yes regardless of the time of day. My dietitian friend taught me that no food is good or bad, there is only sometimes foods and all the times foods. So I make sure to it as a sometimes treat. Sometimes he’ll even turn it down now because it’s not special, it’s just a random thing now

And honestly restricting these items and then having those children in this kind of setting is frustrating for everyone. Just got back from fam vacay and there were SO many meltdowns over sweets/“junk” food. It’s annoying

I think this is the way to go for the majority of kids! I feel like it gives them a chance to see how their body is feeling and allows them to learn self control.
Otherwise you train yourself to eat crap you don't feel like because it's your only chance at getting it.

I’m so happy to see the results actually work, I have a toddler and I don’t restrict her on sweets. If she asks for them but I do feed her healthy foods and offer them as a snack first

I grew up with no restrictions on food and while I have a sweet tooth, I don’t really like most candy and I rarely snack. I think a lot has to do with it never being a big deal. Even as a kid, I’d end up tossing half my Halloween candy.

That’s surprising considering your mom was so frugal and didn’t like to waste. I would think she would be more the type to ration it out for all year 😅

I grew up with food and soda being restricted. We made sure my kids had no restrictions on food or drinks. They will pick fruit, vegetables, water over junk food

i also grew up with zero candy restriction and i actually don’t really like candy! i have a sweet tooth but my easter and halloween candy typically went untouched bc i found out what sweet things i liked and bc it was never restricted i wasn’t super fixated on eating all the time,, if that makes sense

My kids are the same way. I typically throw out Halloween, Easter, and Christmas candy when it expires. They can have it sitting on the counter and not eat it. I would have eating the whole basket of candy

When I was a kid, my mom would hang my Halloween candy bag on the pantry door. I could have whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it. She wouldn't buy MORE candy, but that was mine. It got to a point at about the same age as your kids where I would have a few pieces a day for the first couple weeks, but rarely go into it after that, too the point that it wouldn't be empty the next halloween. But it was still always there. Now I don't have much of a sweet tooth.

Same with my kids. We have a candy jar that we keep full and it’s stays full if it’s just my kids. They have friends come over and it’s just gone, it’s really wild.
