Tywin was ruthless and aimed to make his house the dynasty. Unfortunately to him, he was also blind and thought that his will would live long after him so he thought brute forcing his way worked. He didn't see cracks his way created as he thought his will was absolute. That was his downfall.

He plotted with Olenna to kill Joffrey. He couldn’t control him but he could control Tommin. Remember the walk Olenna took with Tywinn in the garden before the wedding and when Joffrey is poisoned Tywinn doesnt react, he runs to Tommin.
