@lizethloweofficial: The Biology of Survival One of the most dangerous misconceptions about trauma is the belief that if someone didn’t fight back, scream, run, or show obvious signs of physical resistance, then what happened to them must somehow be less believable. But the human nervous system does not respond to danger according to what will make sense later. It responds according to one command: Survive. When the brain perceives extreme fear or threat, the amygdala and other survival systems can rapidly activate automatic responses before conscious, rational decision making has time to catch up. We often hear about fight or flight, but survival can also look like freezing, becoming immobilized, complying, going quiet, dissociating, or trying not to escalate the threat. A person may be unable to scream. Unable to move. Unable to fight. They may comply because, in that moment, their brain perceives resistance as more dangerous. They may do “nothing” because doing nothing is what their nervous system determines gives them the best chance of surviving. That is not consent. And it is not evidence that someone wasn’t afraid. We have to stop judging a person’s response to trauma by imagining what we think we would have done. The question should not be: “Why didn’t you fight back?” Sometimes the more important question is: “What did your body have to do to keep you alive?” Survival does not always look like fighting.
