It is definitely easy to overlook if you only look at the surface, but he is not just "sailing away in exile" as if he were kicked off the island. It is a significant departure from the original epic. In Homer's poem, Odysseus has no remorse for the Trojan Horse, mourns only for his lost men and missing years, and returns home to reclaim his rightful throne from some arrogant suitors. In the film, however, he figures out what those terrifying "sea people" rumors really are: that he and his men are the monsters everyone has been fearing. He has to face the fact that his Trojan Horse wasn't just a clever trick; it was an act of barbarism that started the destruction his men and he caused and that now threatens his own coast. He isn't leaving just because of banishment. He's leaving because the weight of his guilt finally hits him.

I was really sad with the ending, not that it’s a new interpretation I love that, but because they left Telemachus. Telemachus just met his father again and he’s being left alone??? I thought there was an entire plot point that Telemachus wasn’t ready, and then he just all the sudden was?? Imagine being Telemachus bro. He must’ve been so sad

People don’t understand the extreme radical change from the original. In the myth Odysseus and the relatives of the suitors end their war when Athena herself appears and orders the fighting related to the Trojan War ended forever. He doesn’t leave. Myths are religious stories of human interaction with the divine told through metaphor or allegory. Nolan stripped the divinity of the story and radically changed multiple parts including the ending while lying about it being a faithful adaptation. Even the author of the translation he used is disgusted by his narrative choices that mutilated the original meaning of the story. Nolan’s ending isn’t a reinterpretation but the exact opposite of what happens in the original poem which is a religious tale. In the original the moral is regardless of the horror of war from beginning to end soldiers will return home radically different and find a home that’s radically different, it’s a hard reality that takes extreme work to transition back into civilian life but it’s still home and your family will still accept and love you. The moral of the movie is don’t bother going home because there’s no point, which is an evil lie to reinforce.
