We use socialism to recruit poor kids to go fight for capitalism.

It’s wild how many people in the us are in the army, or in prison. I think it really contributes to how violent the society is

I’ve heard an idea that the US military is basically just an alternative to social assistance and universal healthcare. Essentially spending the money on the military instead of those programs. This way people that are below the poverty line are forced to join the military.

The military is where the US (and other countries too) loves Socialism. Money for school, healthcare, etc. So they can invade countries who are already doing that for all of their people and tell everyone how bad Socialism is.

The US military is the only way that Americans can access some kind of socialism

what i always find very interresting is how the american society just has this mindset that a part of their culture is going to war. in europe (where im from) they could never do like 8 military operation and let thousands of soliders without any critiscm and demonstrations.

US having such shocking wealth disparity is by design, so the desperate join the military

It might be even more important how you told this story than the actual numbers and processes: US centric media extracts the US out of strategic demography analysis, but you used the same words you and others use for Russia or countries in the mental periphery map of the Western-anglophone sphere, which creates a sober view on the US.

The MOST horrendous part of the present administration is how terribly they treat GIs and veterans

My grandfather enlisted in the army to go to Vietnam. He was 16. My mom asked why he did it. He said “I was hungry”.

One thing that hasn’t been touched upon is the huge pay packets offered to sign up for ICE, and the continued higher pay for private contractors in places like Iraq. Great commentary though !

I recall Jessica Lynch, who was captured in 2003. She joined the military because she needed money to become a kindergarten teacher. That the only way a young women can become a teacher, a profession that is so important to our country, is to join the military is totally unacceptable.

My dad was a career serviceman but he and my mom both had PhDs. For complicated reasons we lived in enlisted housing and everyone around us came from disenfranchised backgrounds, had little to no post-secondary education, etc. For my dad the military was A choice. For our neighbors? They didn't see other choices.

My family was in the military. My brother and I joined the Army Guard. I spent 12 years, and got out. My brother stayed in. I have had people ask me if I recommend service. I say absolutely not. But if you do, don't go into anything other than airforce. They have more money to take care of you, and for the most part actually seem to care about their personnel.

The post 911 gi bill is one of the best incentives to get lower to middle class background recruits. To get recruits from higher income backgrounds, my idea is make ALL tax incentives contingent on military service. That includes the home loan deduction and even long term capital gains tax. Also my idea means corporations won’t get these deductions either because corporations don’t enlist

Interest take. I, like you, joined the Army after high school. I got the honor of 3 different field trips over yonder in late 2001, 03 and 2005. 😅😅😅 There has always been a gap between the people starting the wars and the people fighting them. To me, joining the military is a great path for middle class kids.

Interesting but I doubt we’ll ever need that many soldiers with the advancements and drones. Just look at Ukraine withstand. The hordes of Russian soldiers were dying an incredible rates because they don’t understand technology.

I’m a military brat of a career army officer. When I said I wanted to go into the military, my father looked at me and said, no son of mine is going into the military…. That was very telling…
