Typically I would say each just go to their own friends wedding,but I think the wrinkle here is that she went out of her way to ask her friend if they could make room for him when he wasn't originally on the guest list and now he's backing out after other people have been inconvenienced. It's going to make OP look bad with her friends and possibly cause a rift with them. Because of that, I think he should honor his original commitment.

You each go to your own friend's wedding. He has a stronger relationship with his friend than he does to yours. Since you're allowed to bring a plus one, just take someone else with you.

I think she needs to reach out to her friend and apologize for the inconvenience and ask how she would prefer to handle the situation. It would be very rude to show up solo or with some random person as weddings usually have people who didn’t make the cut and could be invited instead

Technically, he agreed to go to his friends wedding first. The story said the man’s friend didn’t send a save the date but he was most likely verbal invited after the proposal and agreed to go to their wedding. So I think the best thing to do is each go to their own friends wedding.
