Florence, like many women of her time and class, were told to give up any dreams, ambitions, or hobbies that interfered with their ‘true’ purpose as wives and mothers. This left middle class women economically dependent and often suffering with serious mental health conditions. Florence became a nurse to help cope with her depression, but in order to do so she had to remain unmarried. She hoped that one day society would change its views, and would celebrate women choosing their own paths in life. she was a complex person; yes she completely changed nursing and had some feminist views... but she also had colonist and racist views as well. Especially regarding indigenous people's.

She also was chronically ill and spent many years bedridden, which is when she did a lot of her writing. It is suspected that she may have had contracted brucellosis in the Crimean war which caused this. International ME day is on her birthday because of this.

And boy did she achieve her purpose! Her gift to mankind wasn’t just the practices of nursing she pioneered, but also her use of statistics and data visualisation to document her successes. I love that she developed the polar area diagram - which should always definitely be called the Nightingale Rose chart - and was the first female elected as a member of the Royal Statistical Society!

When she writes that “woman must annihilate herself” and “a married woman does not exist in the eyes of the law”, this is literally true in a legal sense. Women ceased to have a separate legal identity when they married; they assumed their husband’s legal identity. Husband and wife became a single legal entity, like a single company or a single person with four hands and two mouths, and the man’s legal identity always subsumed the wife’s. It’s why wives couldn’t own anything themselves and it all went to their husbands (because her legal identity was absorbed into his; you can’t say that your right hand owns something but your left hand doesn’t) and wives couldn’t be compelled by courts to testify against their husbands (you can’t call on a person to testify against themselves)
