I find that its a human thing to be kind of dumb and people say/ask some wild things. After almost 30 years with mh disability I start to realize its just a humam flaw so I usually just try to educate. Most recent was a man saw my insulin pump on my arm and asked if it was birth control. that was a new one. I decided to have fun and tell him its an anti-aging device, brand new from Japan. I said it takes my stem cells and revitalized them and reinsert into my body. I said i was actually 62. I am 37. you can always entertain yourself and make up different stories

I think it's kinda inappropriate to ask. you might be asking someone to describe their worst day ever

Depends… children, or people who are obviously curious (not just gawking), i’ll say something like, “weird eh”, or “not something you see everyday”. I find that breaks the ice and if they want to ask from there that good to go, if they don’t ask than that is it. No harm no fowl.

I get asked all the time, usually people saying they’ve been in the same situation with a knee replacement or knee surgery (I wear a computerized leg brace). I usually let them ask first and will respond with something outrageously lighthearted. Like I was fighting off a grizzly bear at the local playground or something lol. (They def don’t have grizzlies here in TX)

I absolutely love awkward situations so I would not even acknowledge that anything was different and wait. And when they start to hint around it I would act dumb and give them a quizzical look. Also, no one should ever take advice from me.

I lost both legs in one year on two different non related incidents. Ijust love children's different reactions to both my 'robot legs' because it is always so unfiltered and brutally honest. Children dont need long explanations. Just "a shark and a dog", and thats it. They normally continue with their own story of the day they cut their foot on a glass, and got 2 stitches at the hospital. At my lill girl's school, I am her "cool dad' with robot legs. I drop and. collect her at school on a big Honda Goldwing Trike. on playdates at our house, I am always nominated to be the monster that chases them all over in my wheelchair. Adults? If you want to know, just ask. I love to share my story of survival and positive living through my faith in Jesus Christ.

I don't treat it as the elephant in the room. if someone is curious I'm happy to answer questions, but otherwise I'm just another person.

If I'm curious, I come right out and ask. We're all adults and should have no issues having a conversation. If someone doesn't wanna talk about whatever, then there should be no problem saying so. Let's all be grown-ups

🤨 Not awkward at all. Whenever they feel like it, I guess. Then again, I've been an amputee since 1970

You don’t bring it up, if they do ask you respectfully add it in the conversation without feeling irritated, I have never been offended because someone ask me. I make everyone feel comfortable, it’s part of our life now and it make a topic of conversation

ummm... I'd walk right up and say "Please tell me you lost your leg saving a baby from an alligator!" it's only awkward if people make it awkward.

Personally I’m very much a “it’s not my business, you can tell me if you want to but I don’t need to know” kind of person. But also I wouldn’t be offended if people asked me about this. It’s a leg. It’s normal to have two, and you don’t. It is definitely interesting and some people just want to know even if it’s got nothing to do with them. It’s hard to imagine that I would ever be offended by someone asking but I’ve never had to deal with that question probably several times a week for years on end, so it’s hard to say for sure.
