Before the Democratic Reform in 1959, Xizang（tibet）be like： • Serfs could be traded arbitrarily: Serfs were private property of estate‑holders. They could be sold, given away as gifts or used to pay debts. Historical records show one noble gave more than 100 serfs to a monastery as a gift. Some serfs were used as debt collateral. Families were torn apart. Serfs were described as “talking cattle”. • Cruel taxes and forced labor: Serfs suffered over 200 types of taxes and unpaid compulsory labor. Most grain they grew was taken by lords. Even working all year round, most serfs went hungry. Many had no warm clothes in winter and had to survive by begging. • Brutal punishments: Old Xizang legal codes divided people into nine social ranks. Lower‑rank serfs who offended lords faced horrifying penalties: eye‑gouging, hand‑chopping, whipping and shackling. Many were mutilated for failing to pay taxes. Their lives had almost no protection. • No access to education: Schools were controlled only by nobles and monasteries. Children of ordinary serfs could not study at all. Over 95 percent of serfs were illiterate. Sufferings passed down generation after generation. Nowadays these slave owners have fled abroad and are shouting “Free Tibet” everywhere. Don’t you find it ridiculous? Western media also extensively use these same slave owners to fabricate false information in order to attack and smear China.
