I inherited my mother‘s house. I lived there 35 years ago, and I knew where the property line was, because she had a line of trees that went off at an angle, separating her from the neighbor on the left. She had the trees taken down years ago. New neighbors moved in and their kids keep all sorts of playground junk in my front yard (beyond where the tree line once was). I mentioned something to those neighbors when I first got the deed past to me. They tried to say that pins were somewhere where they really weren’t. I ended up getting a survey anyway, which proved that I knew exactly where the property line was 35 years ago.Every time I move their kids playground junk off the lawn, they move it back. I can’t wait for a fence.

as a cadastral surveyor from Finland, this is very familiar, but our property markers are a lot more obvious, so we generally can find them with just getting within a few meters using gnss. Oldest markers are typically large stone formations with 5 rocks with a number chiseled in, modern ones are metal rods with like a 5" metal cube on the top which is typically left above the surface. We also use bolts drilled into bedrock, varies a lot depending on how old they are. Oldest are from the late 1700's.

I need a surveyor for 1 property line between the neighbors & our house. I’m being quoted $3000 😅 . If I find markers with a metal detector , am I allowed to use that along with the parcel map to install a fence ?

Our town recently discovered that a multimillion dollar beachfront property that boarders the beach, actually doesn't own a good third of the property within its fences, and its public land. The owners, generations ago, had just gone and fenced it off and everyone just assumed it belonged to them. Only came out after the last owner died and it got surveyed
