Also, some of the most iconic shows didn’t become popular until after the 2nd or 3rd season. Now, Ithe show isn’t an immediate hit It gets canceled. That would have killed Breaking Bad, Friends, Seinfeld, 90210, etc.

The BBC model (imperfect) is still better than this 22-25 episode season. the two dozen episode season wasn't designed to sustain local economies, it was set up to drive ad revenue. People want really good writing (stories and dialogue), acting, directing, and production. They don't want marketing. the American studios don't know how to produce consistent content and make the kind of money they want simultaneously, so they just keep making bad shows in hopes it will do numbers. the obvious better solution is something that doesn't have solely a profit motive.

Shows also don’t get the time to really develop their characters. We used to get like 20 episode seasons, it felt like we knew these characters in very personal ways. Now we get maybe 10-12 episodes with them.

Spoke with a writer once who said (paraphrasing) that “Hollywood is intentionally inefficient” and this clip reminded me of that. A corporate exec might look at film/TV as an irrational business, but there’s so much lost — in producing great work, maintaining morale, etc. — when you become too strict with the economics of entertainment
