Hey so it’s actually a myth that birds reject their babies if touched by us, putting it back in the nest is the right thing to do 🥰🥰

you did exactly what a rehabber would tell you to do. barn swallowed love stables and man made structure keep and eye and replace the nestling if it is too youmg to fly.

Hi! Someone who studied birds and myths, birds don’t have a good sense of smell, birds won’t reject the baby, she may leave them due to human activity but not because her baby smells funny! That’s a myth people made up to keep kids from touching wildlife!

its a myth that animals reject their babies because of human scent. if they are truly rejected then there's something wrong with it and that's why humans find them. he probably fell while flapping his wings and not expecting to get any lift from his new feathers

wildlife rehabber here, you did good! mother birds NEVER abandon their babys after humans have touched it. only mamals do that like deer, rabbits and hare. so you putting the luttle one back is the right choice!

Mama birds won’t reject their babies if they smell different, it’s a myth so people don’t pick up random animals they see👍👍

Dont stress at all it’s a complete myth that they’ll abandon them if you touch them you could probably put a completely difference species chick in there and the mother would probably still feed it and what not.

Don’t worry birds have poor scent and sometimes other birds will feed young you can handle and feed them yourself and the mum won’t reject x

I had one fall in my stable was too high to put back in the nest so it spent about 2 weeks on my stable floor where mum and dad looked after it. I was lucky enough to witness it flying away when it was big and strong enough

You don't need to worry about scent, birds are sight-based hunters for a reason (if you look at close up pictures of birds you can see how small their nostrils are), wee baby shouldn't have any issues with mama in that regard, the whole "don't touch birds bc the mother will reject it" thing is a myth/white lie mostly used by parents to discourage their children from trying to catch birds and bring them home as young kids have a tendency to do with cute animals. Interesting fact related to this, spotted cuckoos often lay their eggs in crow nests to be raised alongside the baby crows (animals raised like this are known as brood parasites, though despite the name it isn't always a bad thing), and the toxic and pungent scent-based defences of the baby cuckoo end up protecting the crows that raise it from predators that rely more on smell (and in terms of other sight-based birds of prey the crows often do just fine themselves, the standard tactic is all adult crows in the vicinity mobbing the intruding predator). So yeah the baby you put back should be just fine unless the mother already rejected it for some other reason, but chances are the wee thing likely just fell out of the nest by accident
