Code switching has never remotely been an exclusively black thing.

I just had a talk with my 25 yr old about "appropriate" speech. you cant talk to elders like his grandparents like "yo yo yo wassup". and that is a form of code switching in a way. you also cant speak that way on a job interviews. you do have appropriate places to talk certain ways.

This is so interesting. I think I may do a form of code switching as an autistic person in a professional environment. I tend to mask autistic traits to fit in.

That young man wasn't code switching, he was dropping his blaccent and use of AAVE which they're renaming to drop the African American out of the acronym. There are several videos recently hitting the timeline like it's some coordinated effort.

I'm open to criticism, but as a white neurodivergent blue collar worker, I code switch all the time. I communicate differently with people I work with, people who are also neurodivergent, people who know me well, and people I don't know. I fully understand my well being isn't nearly as dependent on me acting "normal" but it certainly makes it easier to navigate in a society I still don't fully understand.

What that guy is describing relates to CLASS not RACE but no matter how well he thinks he’s “code switching” people in a higher class know he’s not like them.

So, forgive me for my ignorance because I’m am not American and your various American cultures are very different to ours and things that are off limits for you guys are not for us and visa versa. Is code switching like the way women change their language and body language etc when they’re around men to “fit in”, make themselves less of a target and more of “one of the lads” in order to feel safer, be more likely to get a pay rise or promotion etc etc? Or is code switching a black American only concept? Am I even right in what I believe code switching to be?

So black people can call changing their speech pattern code switching and it’s all hip and cool, but when I do it my psychiatrist diagnoses me with ASPD and tells me that I have a pattern of manipulating the people closest to me for my own ends and I don’t form genuine emotional attachments and have a disturbing lack of empathy and then they medicate me and I’m sleepy

We use the term "code switching" in psycholinguistics and forensic liniguistics, too. I use code switching, as a polyglot, when I switch between my native language and Spanish. When even call it code switching when we move from the dominant language to the heritage language, which is common in Latine and Indigenous communities: the Spanish I speak at home and with the inner circle will not be the same Spanish I speak when conducting business, or visiting another Spanish speaking country. I don't know how any one culture or race can lay claim to a linguistic term.

This is completely simplifying the concept of “code-switching” because black people have never adopted the same tactics from the people you showed. They don’t cover the social political aspects of it. Gumperz focused primarily on how switches serve as contextualization cues to help people understand each other. But he never focused heavily on how racial power dynamics, systemic discrimination, and linguistic racism turn code switching into a tool for self preservation and survival for Black Americans. The pattern recognition I’ve noticed is that white people only used it as to cosplay black folks and gain social status to seem rebellious.
