@emilyt_therapy: Replying to @bartem102 treating self-harm in minors means treating within a family system. Parents have the legal authority to make many treatment decisions, and those decisions can shape, or often limit, the interventions I can use. Harm reduction is often not an option, and I help the patient navigate that the best we can. #bpdtherapist #bpdtiktok #borderlinepersonalitydisorder #cptsd #complexptsd
Never take away the sh stuff. They will just move to drugs or alcohol or something more permanent. If you just immediately take away their only outlet that makes them feel better you are just putting them in a worse mental state

Becoming an adult almost helped me more because nobody was really forcing me to stop anymore, I had to sit down and think if that was a choice I PERSONALLY wanted to make. It was nobody else’s choice.

Yeah it’s an example of kids having no rights or autonomy or real respect :// this kind of thing kills kids and it’s devastating because I know so many therapists who don’t like it either but have no choice.

Lucky to grow up in a country where this is handled discreetly, cause disclosure would’ve killed me.

As soon as I moved out I stopped SHing. Almost 5 years now. It was literally a week of SH once I was out but then I wasn’t triggered daily, I was able to make boundaries easier without someone walking in all the time.

I started SH while already in therapy and knew if I told my therapist she had to tell my mom, who was indeed the reason 🥲 my second therapist I had to tell and begged for them to make my mom leave the room for the intake but she wouldnt and they didnt make her. Got screamed at in the car about "starving children in africa" on the way to the next appointment 😭 only stopped bc I was hospitalized and was too scared of being taken back there against my will. 10+ years clean now and no contact with my mom 🙏🏼

All I did was lie to my therapist until I turned 18 bc my mom didn’t believe in mental health. I begged her to put me, she puts me in therapy, and then ripped me a new one any time I was honest about my home life or fessed up to self harm

crazy thing i’ve learned is that like one in three adults self injure. it’s not something you can just stop when you turn an adult. i’m 23 and i still self injure. i know thirty eight year olds, fifty year olds, who still self injure. it’s crazy

It sucks that harm reduction can't be part of recovery for minors. Especially since most people who self harm are under 18. That really leaves minors stuck, leading to lies since they may feel like they have no other option 😐

My mum knew I was never going to stop when I was a teen. As she knew that I would just find ways to hide them. Which I did. So she wanted me to at least learn how to disinfect what I used. So if I did it I did it safely. Which created a safe space for me to go to her when I did it. Which she then would treat the wounds or close them up (if it was possible without a doctor). I think many back then looked at her and thought it was odd. But it was actually creating such a safe space for me to instead let out my emotions and to trust her. Eventually I did stop and haven’t done it in so many years that I can’t count. It’s been that long. As she introduced safety to express my emotions to her, if I did do harmful things to myself that I won’t be told off. I found new safe ways to process what I was feelings because she tried to at least introduce different methods that are safer such as journaling etc

legit a few reasons I didn't tell any adults about my self harm problems was because i did NOT want my parents to find out. (they did and threatened to send me to a mental hospital so I eventually stopped)

I did it for so long (10 years roughly) that I really thought it was just how I was. One day I realized I was finding different ways to cope and my scars were all flat.
