Very good video, thanks for making it. For those who are curious, I got my info from Michele Cammarosano, “Cuneiform Writing Techniques in the Ancient Near East”.

Arum Reposted! This is healthy academia, folks: being willing to defer to other experts if they have context that you don’t. Class act, lads!

What level of nerd is it that I’m fully aware of and invested in every level on the cuneiform drama

That did bother me in the original video. There was no consideration for artistic licence; it’s like assuming Egyptians walked sideways because that’s how their reliefs were carved

it's unconfirmed but seems likely that ancient peoples had hands that were incredibly similar if not identical to our own

Guys, he's not discrediting Arum entirely as a scholar or even saying that we're 100% certain that he's wrong, he's just disagreeing and adding what he feels is important context that Arum missed. This is respectful scholarly discourse, not a time to start attacking people's personalities and content

I love his videos, but that one irked me a bit. Saying that scribes all held their pens/styluses a certain way based off of ancient artwork is like saying this is how horses looked back in medieval times....

all the people ragging on Arum assuming he's mad, meanwhile he reposted your video 😂 I love academics sharing information and discussing; not every disagreement is an argument, y'all.

I mean, today in modern times, there is a "correct" way to hold a pen and pencil but each individual person really has their own unique way of ACTUALLY grasping the writing instrument. There is a "correct" way to type but not all people use it, especially on smaller devices where wer use our thumbs instead 🤷♀️

I'm a professional calligrapher and I gave him essentially the same response in the comments. I hold my pen differently depending on the kind of pen, size of the work, the style of the writing, the medium. The dogmatic talk of paleographers who've never done any calligraphy themselves is, frankly, irritating. They have a stunted idea of how form follows movement, posture, rhythm, pen hold, etc.

wouldn't the easiest way to learn how they wrote be analyzing preserved styluses?

How would you hold it if you were angrily writing letters about the poor quality of your copper though? The stabbing motion seems more appropriate.
