For anyone wanting to raise awareness and support research, please understand that animal models will be involved in that research. I know it’s super unpopular, but animals (95% being mice and rats) are vital to learning about human diseases. They serve as models because they’re small, have short lifespans, have large litters, and are genetically very similar to us. They can be given human genes or have their own genes turned on or off to help us study all kinds of things from immune responses to heart disease and cancer. I used to work for a lab rodent supplier and we sent mice and rats to every major US university and even St. Jude’s children’s hospital and Cincinnati Zoo. I’ve adopted 3 rats and 8 mice from a few clients at my current job and I love them. We really do care about the animals used in biomedical research. I know it seems like we don’t because of the propaganda against us but I promise you my entire job is caring for them. These 2 are almost two years old and enjoying retirement snacks

my grandpa had the sporadic variant, they verified it in the autopsy (it's mandatory for the diagnosis in my country). I still can't ever donate blood in my country because he had it, even though it wasn't genetic. they take that shit seriously, as they should.

You can also get it from eating infected deer that have Chronic Wasting Disease. People suspect that a lot of hunters may have it and that it’s just sitting dormant in their system for years. A good podcast to listen to, to get more info is “This podcast will kill you” episode 20!

the most insane thing ever is hunters eating deer infected with CWD because it’s “never transferred to humans” but we KNOW you can get it from infected meat when it’s mad cow disease… WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT

My grandpa passed away in 2011 from sporadic fatal insomnia. I was only 10 at the time and had no idea what was going on, but even from the limited knowledge I had I was and am forever terrified of prion disease. My sister is actually doing a PHD in prion disease atm because of him!

CJD is rare. About 1-2 people per million. I’ve seen around 4 cases since becoming a physician. Extremely devastating diagnosis.

We had a whole thing in the 90s in the uk where millions of cows had to be culled and a new variant of CJD popped up. I was a kid and still remember it being a thing.

question, because i am obsessed with prison diseases, did your mother happen to be in Britain in the 1980s? or had a chance to come in contact with any British meat from that time? there was an epidemic of tainted meat in the 80s that could possibly lead to sickness later in life. sorry if this isnt a feasible option, just something I thought of when you mentioned thinking it may be sporadic vs the others

ive eaten bush meat in Mexico and brain meat in Mexico. its a delicacy and then I had deer meat in Texas. both while I was a kid and I'm terrified in already infected
