Is Epic entirely accurate to the actual epic? No. But I can forgive that because Jorge never said it was supposed to be 100% accurate. Like the original story, no mortal would’ve fought with the gods, won, and be rewarded for that. But that’s really reflective of how our views on the gods have changed from Hellenistic times to modern times.

I view Epic and Hamilton the same NGL. They aren't supposed to be ACCURATE retellings but rather ENTERTAINING ones for modern audiences.

i also give a lot more adaptation leeway to a musical that started as someone’s thesis project and just happened to blow up online and get properly developed vs a Nolan movie with a star studded cast

I enjoy Epic a lot but i hold it in the same regard as how Rick Riordan retells the myths in the Percy Jackson series like yes it’s based on the original story but it’s definitely a different interpretation/alternate universe/what have you. I think having Odysseus and Poseidon as foils works, and the ending works, if it’s about ruthlessness, but if it’s ever gonna get passed concept album stage, Jorge will likely need to do a lot more workshopping with 600 Strikes and a few other areas of the various sagas

Honestly I view epic as completely independent of the odyssey. Like that one film which is a little red riding hood retelling but little red riding hood is like a criminal or something and the wolf is her coworker.

I think it also helps that Epic was always a concept album. it was never the going to be the full official product, so I am excited for the animation because that means we may get new and maybe approved versions of the songs

600 strike is also a skip for me. I’m not a fan of the anime type dialogue in the song. I feel like epic is at its strongest when it’s not trying to be a video game for anime.

My own lil theory is that Poseidon couldn’t kill him immediately. his cyclops son when taking the wine said as a thank you, he’d be the last one to die. A deal that Poseidon had to honor and after his last man died, the pain was too deep to get it over with quickly

I mean. ruthlessness is still the personal mercy by the end. he kills all the suitors to prevent any more harm onto his family. he tells Athena that maybe one day humans can be kind but that isnt today and he doesnt think he will live to see that point

I can forgive Epic because it was never meant to be a 1 to 1 adaptation. Plus its a musical, it's not going to be accurate but the themes are going to be there or at least brought up, but in Nolan's it just,,,,wasn't there???

I definitely think that Epics message is different from the original. I think the message is more about ruthlessness and the lengths a person will go to in order to return to the ones you love, and how far someone can be pushed before they break. I definitely think the moment with Poseidon being stabbed is a low moment in Odysseus's personal story. either way I like it way more than Nolan's thing. at the very least it actually has the gods and treats them like people with flaws and motivations

Sorry but to clarify: ten years were the Trojan war, then ten years for the odyssey! So he’s been gone 20 years, but he’s 10 years late

there's also the fact that it's still a concept album. There's room for it to be changed. Whenever we get the animated film, things are possibly changed

this is so irrelevant but I'm pretty sure the odyssey is 10 years. Odysseus is away from Ithaca for 20 but 10 of those are the Trojan war. I'm pretty sure he spent like 7 years with calypso and one year with Circe but I could be wrong with that. and at least that timeline aspect doesn't necessarily apply to adaptations like epic

I think it's because Epic is not about hubris it's about ruthlessness, which I believe Jorge said

Absolutely, give epic leeway, because it's a musical and it was made on a budget, and it was made by the fandom. This movie has a gigantic budget, not. That it doesn't have amazing visuals apart from it. But the Odyssey is a fantastical story. The reason why the nobody trick works in the Odyssey is because it's a fantastical story. The reason why many of the things in the others work is because it's a fantastical story, and they think Nolan has drifted of that color and\n Fantastical.

Oh yeah… and when it comes to Penelope, I genuinely think Penelope deserved more than a single act so she could actually be present in the story. It makes her feel more like a prize than a person. And Epic neglected to show Penelope’s struggles in dealing with her maids betraying her to the suitors.

personally, i really like 600 strike. It’s one of my favorites. that being said, epic isn’t supposed to be a one-to-one adaptation of the odyssey. jorge, himself, has said that epic isn’t meant to be an accurate adaptation. epic’s message focuses more on ruthlessness.

I feel like the way that epic went around and up some of the antics makes sense because it was originally supposed to be the soundtrack to a musical video game Jorge says multiple times that he wanted to make this into a video game, I'm not sure whether he's still planning on making it into a video game probably not because somebody bought the rights to make it into a movie. (sorry for any spelling mistakes super sleep deprived)
