The change in jail terms from 2–5 years to 15–25 years was enacted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of Ghana. Key Context & Legislative Details Act: Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995). Background: Prior to 2019 (under Act 900 of 2015), illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) carried a maximum sentence of up to 5 years imprisonment. The Change: To deter illegal mining and strengthen environmental protection, the NPP-led government under President Nana Akufo-Addo introduced Act 995. This amendment raised the minimum prison term for Ghanaians engaging in or facilitating illegal mining to 15 years, with a maximum sentence of 25 years. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
