The Blue Division was a unit of Spanish volunteers who served in the German Army during World War II. Formed in 1941, shortly after the German invasion of the Soviet Union, it was officially designated as the 250th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht. Although Spain under Francisco Franco remained officially neutral in the war, the government authorized volunteers to join the fight against the Soviet Union. This decision was influenced by ideological opposition to communism and by political ties between Spain and Germany following the Spanish Civil War. The division was composed primarily of Spanish soldiers and officers, many of them veterans of the Spanish Civil War. They wore German uniforms with distinctive Spanish insignia, including a shield bearing the national colors. The unit was deployed to the Eastern Front, where it participated in operations around Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) under difficult weather and combat conditions. The Blue Division remained on the Eastern Front from 1941 until 1943. As the broader war situation shifted and international pressure increased, Spain arranged for the unit’s official withdrawal.
