Matthews is the English attempt in the 1600s to Anglicise the McMahon surname (Mac Mathúna ) to English. So if you know any Matthew's it fairly certain that they are descendants of a McMahon family. There were two McMahon families in Ireland - one from Clare area ( the most famous descendant of this branch is Patrice McMahon President of France ) and the other McMahon family is from Monaghan ( the most famous of this family is Archbishop Hugh McMahon - famous for bringing the head of Oliver Plunnkett from Rome to Drogheda
