I got hired at Taco Bell at 17. Just sold my first company, and my second company is flourishing. I remember failing my calculus AP exam because I was so busy at work and my calculus teacher telling me I was wasting my time working for seven dollars an hour. I gained so much more than any calculus exam would have ever gotten me from that job. Love this.

Same…except I was at McDonald’s. I opened the store (way back when McDonald’s first started serving breakfast). Training said my morning approach could change a day, so I gave it my all. I continue based in this training.

I started at a grocery store at 17. It taught me how to talk to people! About 10 years ago I told this story to a teenager. She said, “I ain’t kissing no ones a**.” I said, “we call this customer service! Every person needs it.”

Amen. I will go out of my way to talk to someone, especially if they are helping me. Like actually engage them and give them my undivided attention. You see people shift completely.

My mom is Brazilian, and she moved to the U.S. when she was 20, about a year after marrying my dad. She used to work at McDonald’s, and my dad worked at Wendy’s. They always tell me the lunch line used to stretch out the door. It’s really crazy to think about now because almost everyone orders food on their phone.
