I can't speak for all areas but where I went to school the "traditional" sports, especially football, had boosters and brought money into the school. Meanwhile, the band alums made up the the majority of the band boosters to help pay for equipment, gear, and such. We had 2 a days same as the football team, traveled to all the away games, marched in the parades (while the football team waved from a float), competed in competitions and won many awards. The day would start with stretches and laps, move into drills and formations, and if you were lucky, you'd leave without feeling completely exhausted just to do it all again the next day. The instruments are heavy (even a flute when being held up for 8+ hours), the uniforms are bulky, you're trying to remember notes while also hitting your marks and not get hit by a swinging sousaphone, twist an ankle, or pass out. 1000% marching band is a sport and deserves so 👏 much 👏 more 👏 respect 👏 and recognition.
