He really lead with 'I'm not sure who this woman is', like Google isn't free. Research credentials already in question. 💀

he is conflating what you said "can improve life in the short term" with what he projected on you "are a good thing" then he immediately draws in his personal experience. he was too emotional to process the nuance if your statement.

I agree with you about the main point of this video but would encourage you to research more before making the stigmatized statement that "heroin addicts do better after finding god"
The 12 step programs that have perpetuated this stigma are based in utter pseudo science and lies. they are often found to be cults or cult like themselves.
the clinical term is opioid use disorder and in general substance use disorder. by their own measurements and definitions of success in recovery, 12 step has a less than 30% recovery rate. 3rd party research puts them at 5 to 7 % on average. 12 step blames each individual for "failure" and never the program itself.
As you described some people feel their life is improving because after experiencing extreme vulnerability they find hope, fellowship and purpose in 12 step but that quickly dissolves over time as that support is highly conditional and performative. they threaten you with death & jail or institutions if you leave. they dx you with a disease that isn't real claiming only god can cure it and otherwise you're basically a selfish narcissist. I narrowly escaped with my own life.

😬 Wow the diminishing & patronizing tone before that video by him really made anything else he had to say have zero appeals. It came off as purely misogynistic & as someone with a fragile ego vs videos I *can* appreciate where academics debate topics. Excellent response on your part. At least one of you kept it actually professional.

Great video. He’s coming off as arrogant and unwilling to see nuance. So much of this isn’t black and white. He should have looked up your background as well. I’ve appreciated some of his work, but he needs to do better with TT.

The fact that he didn’t understand the depth of what you said points to why his research was limited in perspective. He wrote a paper and has decided his growth stops there.

i notice a lot of the time that people targeting religion/cults and how they work end up with a narrow viewpoint of what it entails for a person and almost strawman what they actually symbolize

My parents saved their marriage and my dad found support to work on his history of poor decision making when they converted to Mormonism. For a short duration, it was a good thing for them. It didn't end up staying that way, but that doesn't negate that it met their needs in the short-term.

If only Hansen could remember back early on in his time in the Moonies, it clearly was beneficial and useful for him for a time otherwise he wouldn’t have joined. It’s sad when you have to overplay your hand this much. I hope he’s willing to learn something and walk it back a little or he’s gonna lose credibility

It is the same concept as people with trauma, ADHD or other neurological difference turning to substance use if they are unable to easily access proper medication and care. They self-medicate with substances because it is what is available for their own regulation - temporary regulation. We all know it is dangerous in the long run to continue to use these substances but they provide short term relief.

We need civic centers that provide the secular version of church - weekly services / gatherings - daily activities, material services to support well being, education, childcare, elder care, etc
