@ashleytheebarroness: Replying to @someonesdad02 Three men spent one night trying to decide what James Byrd Jr.’s life would mean. They failed. Because before the world knew James Byrd Jr., Jasper knew Son. And one horrible night does not get to erase the 49 years that came before it. #jamesbyrdjr #americanhistory #texas #historytok #fyp
Every sane Texan stays away from Jasper and Vidor.

the year that he and matthew shepard were so violently murdered was the year that i woke tf up. i had always been aware of how savage our society could be, and was always a proponent of civil rights, but those two events changed me.

I'm a Texan. I remember when this happened. I can't hear the name Jasper without remembering Mr. Byrd. Gut wrenching.

as a person local in SETX, I remember the morning he was found. It's broke my heart then and I still mourn a man I never met. To know that kind of hate was so close to us is something I'll never reconcile in my soul.

Texan here, I remember this vividly. After this, I never felt comfortable about East Texas. If I could avoid traveling in that area, I would. Thinking about your words “a known face is a safe face, right?” makes me think of Nolan Wells. This is why we tell our children not to be the only one. Friends or not because “a known face doesn’t equate a safe face”. We can’t afford to take those chances.
