This is why Legend of Korra felt so flat sometimes. The characters faces and bodies were so stiff sometimes because they only really focused on the action scenes.

Nowadays it's about impact frames and stuff. It's not bad but not nearly important and good as what they achieved with ATLA. Even though there are extremely well animations nowadays, ATLA still is ridiculously good compared to them or even better especially in mind that this show came 2005.

Watch the serpents pass episode (where Toph almost drowns). While walking, Aang holds out his staff, wordlessly asking Toph to take it from him. She can see that he's doing that with her feet! So she takes it from him

Yeah that was one of my favorite things where they made the characters feel alive because they always had a small gag or gesture that was in character and have it a inside look at their mindset in a given moment I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH😭
