Every hero is different, so each player takes on a role — a function within the team that defines what they do with their gold, their lane, and their time. Roles are not strict classes; they describe how a hero contributes to victory, and most heroes cover several at once. Four of the core ones are nuker, support, durable, and carry. A nuker deals high burst magical damage through spells. Nukers shine in the early and mid game, deleting squishy targets in seconds, but tend to fall off later when enemies stack magic resistance and health. Think Lina, Lion, Shadow Fiend. A support plays for the team, not for farm. They buy wards, smokes, and dust, protect the carry in lane, and bring healing, saves, and disables to fights. A good support stays impactful with almost no items. Think Crystal Maiden, Dazzle, Undying. A durable is the frontline. High health pools, armor, and damage-reducing abilities let them initiate fights, absorb spells and focus fire, and buy time and space for the rest of the team. Think Bristleback, Centaur Warrunner, Pudge. A carry starts weak but scales harder than anyone. Their job is to farm efficiently, hit item timings, and take over the late game as the team's main damage dealer — the whole draft often plays around getting them there. Think Anti-Mage, Spectre, Faceless Void.
