I got called out to work on this male Dama gazelle after the owner noticed a large lump on the side of his neck. This guy had previously been treated by another veterinarian for a pretty nasty wound that went all the way around his neck. At the time, the wound was infected and had a significant maggot infestation. My visit was a follow-up. The owner wanted to make sure the original wound was healing properly and, more importantly, figure out what this new lump was. Once I got him sedated and could take a closer look, I was happy to see that the original wound was actually healing really well. But there was definitely a large mass on the side of his neck. Whenever you’re dealing with a swelling like this, especially on the neck, anatomy matters. You can’t just see a big lump, assume it’s an abscess, and start cutting. There are some pretty important structures running through the neck—including the carotid arteries and jugular veins—and I’d prefer not to accidentally find one of those. After examining the area, I determined that it was an abscess. I lanced it, drained the infected material, thoroughly cleaned the area, treated him with the appropriate medications, and sent him on his way. Considering how severe his original injury was, I was really pleased with how well the rest of his neck was healing. Now we’ll keep an eye on the abscess site and the original wound, but I expect this guy to continue healing and make a full recovery. #TheWildlifeVet #DrSamWilkinson #DamaGazelle #Veterinarian #WildlifeMedicine
