How did he know the being who appeared to him was truly an angel and not a deceptive spirit? He had never encountered an angel before so on what basis did he identify it as one? In the Bible, when God's angels appear, they typically identify themselves, reassure the person with words like "Do not be afraid," and then deliver God's message. In Muhammad's first reported encounter, there was no reassurance only a command to "Read" and an experience that reportedly left him terrified and uncertain. That difference raises the question, how did he know the being was truly an angel sent by God?
