It's such a weird feeling because you can't point out anything "traumatic" happening to you, but you still carry a burden with you every day from the experience. Its so invalidating to be hindered by feelings like this, but not being able to verbalise why or how. I got diagnosed with avoidant personality disorder a few years ago and I genuinely can't pinpoint anything spesific that happened to me that would cause it to develop, so I don't feel like I can talk about it with people either.

This, and knowing that my emotionally immature parents genuinely did their best and would be totally unequipped to deal with this conversation

I’ve never heard anyone talk about this before. I’m an adult with my own kids now. I KNOW my mom loves me, but doesn’t know me at all. After 50 years of close contact. I don’t think she was known either.

As someone who had “good” parents and couldn’t relate to the usual examples of childhood trauma or neglect, I never fully understood why I felt so messed up…. This is the first explanation that 100% makes sense to me!!

THANK YOU! I felt so guilty using labels like “emotionally neglected” as I was loved. Now this term is way more easy on my heart. Not being emotionally known, as such an emotional kid, was still damaging.

I realised as a kid I was only ever having a surface level relationship with my parents. It hasn't changed into adulthood

This is the distinction I needed: I was loved, but I wasn’t emotionally known—and I didn’t have the words to show anyone what was happening inside me. So I became useful, cheerful and easy, then wondered why I felt alone while surrounded by love. You cannot feel fully known through a self you learned to edit. 🤍 thank you for taking the time to share your energy & wisdom with us.

yeah my parents loved me in theory but not in practice. they lamented about not understanding me, but never tried to understand. my emotional needs were never met until i got away from them and found friends who know and love me at the same time.

I grew up with autism and adhd and later in my teens depression. I know my parents love me but they never understood me. So now I’m (emotionally) hyper independent
