Every morning, without fail, he’d stop by the little grocery store on his way to work and buy me a bag of green grapes. It wasn’t because I asked him to. It wasn’t some grand romantic gesture. He just noticed, once, that I always smiled when I ate them, and after that he decided it was “his job.” If they were out of green grapes, he’d drive to another store. If they were expensive, he’d buy them anyway. Every morning he’d walk through the front door, hold the bag up with a grin, and say, “Your daily grapes have arrived.” I started expecting that sound—the front door opening, the soft rustle of the grocery bag, his voice filling the house. It became such a normal part of life that I stopped thinking about how lucky I was. One rainy Tuesday, I woke up before my alarm because the house was too quiet. I checked my phone. No text. No missed calls. An hour later, there was a knock at the door. A police officer stood on the porch, rain dripping from the brim of his hat. He told me there had been an accident on the highway. A truck had lost control in the storm. He never made it to the grocery store. For weeks afterward, I’d still catch myself listening for the door to open. The hardest part wasn’t birthdays or holidays. It was walking past the produce section and seeing stacks of green grapes. They were just sitting there, exactly where they’d always been, waiting for someone to pick them up. I’d stand there, staring at them, knowing that somewhere in the world there were thousands of people buying grapes without realizing that, for someone else, a simple bag of fruit could hold an entire lifetime of love. I still can’t eat green grapes. Not because I don’t like them anymore. Because every single one tastes like the last promise he never got the chance to keep.
