A fashion executive has apologised after a physical altercation with activists during a New York Fashion Week show on Sunday. Steve Kolb, the chief executive of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, was seen ripping a sign reading, ‘Sheep beaten and bloodied for wool. Don’t buy’, from a PETA campaigner before dragging her to the floor and using his hand to cover her mouth during a show for COS in Manhattan. He also placed his hands over another activist’s mouth during exchanges that stunned industry and celebrities present. Security guards later intervene to remove the activists. PETA has likened the “abusive treatment” of its campaigners to what “happens to sheep in the woold industry, when they’re restrained, beaten, and roughly shorn”. Mr Kolb addressed his actions in a statement on Sunday, saying: “I reacted inappropriately to an incident at a show earlier today. It wasn’t my place to do so. I should have let the security team handle the situation.” The council for fashion designers echoed his statement but would not comment on whether Mr Kolb would be disciplined or lose his job over the incident, when questioned by the New York Times. Commenting on social media, one person wrote: “Covering her mouth? I know the activist was disruptive (that’s the point) but she’s entitled to her opinion just as he’s entitled to his. But to drag her down and cover her mouth looks so bad. She could simply have been removed by security (optics still bad but less so).” #5news #fashion
