I once had ER call for report 1 second after the patient was paged. I told them to call back in 5 minutes so I could look the patient up. Well, turns out the patient had a BP in the 60s and actually needed to go to ICU, not my unit. So yes, you will call back to give me report if I don't know anything about the patient.

It’s almost as if nurses are busy and may need a second to take report from you and prepare for the pt.

Former floor nurse now pacu and OMG so true. If you have an empty room you’re getting an admission. Don’t play dumb. You don’t need to look the pt up either, thats what report is for. I can’t even imagine putting the OR on pacu hold to “look the pt up”. CRNAs would cackle in my face.

I’m gonna look the patient up before I take report, so if I didn’t know I was getting that patient, you’re gonna wait. Also if I discharged patient from room 12 and someone else is getting the new 12, it might not be mine…

The patient has to be assigned appropriately lol. That’s just the way it is. If you call before we even know an admission was targeted, we don’t know who is the best nurse to take that patient. It’s inconvenient but….safe for the patient, protects the nurse, and the unit. Sorry! 🤷♀️

Floor Nurse here, too many times I have had higher level of care patients show up with no report and had to call a RRT or code. I know the ER gets busy so I don't care if they call report as long as I can verify the patient is stable since unlike the ER we DON'T have Doctors that we can just walk over and get.

As an ER nurse, I would say yeah well I didn’t know I was getting 3 ambulances but there we are.

At my old hospital, if you didn't take report as soon as the ER called, they brought the patient right up. One time a patient had a stroke on the way up from the ER (also full of 💩), the ER nurse didn't even notice and as soon as the patient was put in the bed, we called a Code Stroke. So yeah, give that floor nurse time to call back and look up the patient.

you know what it means. a nurse cant just accept patients just because someone says they are. they need to confirm with the charge nurse first.
