@emmaskies: Apparently people think booktokers are lying about reviews again. Y’all. This is not a widespread problem. Whether you think it’s for clout or for money, I promise you that effort would be better spent in literally any other niche. Book internet engagement is so low outside of a very specific set of talking points 💀 But the allure of this rumor - or whatever you want to call it - is that it’s simple and a little bit salacious fun to believe and talk about. Which is exactly how conspiracies get people too, btw! We’re just normal people who have varying tastes and often talk to each other. 📚 #BookTok #books #bookreview #booktoker

It’s been four hours and nobody in the comments has laughed at my mug joke and I’m sad about it

I also think its based in misogyny since the majority of booktok is made up of women and the audience is women. so it feels like a lot of people are saying that these girls couldn't possibly be reading all those books and they must be lying about their hobby for clout

It’s the natural extension of the “hundred books a year” discourse as well too. Like since we “can’t read that much”, obviously we’re lying 🙄

I would love some of that secret publisher money that apparently exists (until the FTC ruins my life)

I swear because THEY can’t read a 400 page book in a day, these people believe no one can. They’re also forgetting that some people are fast readers but also some of these creators have become full time readers as a job so they’re kind of paid to read and give their honest opinions (and we’re all jealous hahah!!!)

This is the weirdest TikTok drama I’ve ever heard of. I don’t think I’ve ever thought “oh they didn’t actually read that.” If someone is reviewing something. People are weird

I feel like a lot of the discourse that we come across on booktalk it always stems from jealousy. Oh, you can read 11 books in a month, but I can’t do that so that means you can’t do that. You know what I mean like it’s stems from jealousy.

I saw someone say people aren’t reading books because their Goodreads reviews sound generic. Unless I was given an ARC, I do not write a Goodreads review. Guess that means I don’t read lol

Our Court of Wanderers reviews are so similar one of us must be lying! It’s not like we had extensive conversations about how disappointing that book was… Nope. Big conspiracy is way more likely than two booktokers being friends

People don’t bat and eye about binge watching a whole show in a weekend but suddenly reading more than one book it’s impossible and a lie. Some books are just also more popular and the algorithm it’s going to push you out more content about it if you liked a video because that’s how it works 🤷🏼‍♀️

I saw a post saying this and I questioned it because i didnt feel like I've run into it. I basically said, name names so we can stay away from them. The response was, "you can totally tell who is doing this its so obvious. They read summaries online so their review sounds generic and just a synopsis of the plot." that sounds like every booktoker because people like quick bites and attention spans are short.

and they’re all cops. who watches creators so closely that they can claim booktokers are lying as a fact?? 😭 someone saying “oh she said she read 200 books this year in her wrap up but she only posted 30 reviews” who says that every single book read deserves a video?? book police 😩

To your point #2, this happens outside of TikTok too. My friend and I started a book club and we recommend books all the time to each other (outside of the monthly read). It usually doesn't take long for several people in the club to read a recommendation that someone threw out there. That's part of being friends and having a joint interest

There was a booktokker who used to just hold up books and shake them to music. She was huge during Covid, but I never see her. I assumed people stopped watching her because she never reviewed a book!

Do I think that maybe a handful of people in the vast world of Booktok/Booktube/Bookstagram were paid to give a good review & because of that they didn’t read the entire book? Absolutely. Do I think it’s something that’s super prevalent & common? No. Books inhabit a certain kind of space in media. And inside that space there isn’t any kind of point to pay people for reviews or to promote a book.

My work obsessed lawyer mother reads 100+ fiction books a year. Generally reads 100 pages a day just by reading a few pages at a time when she gets a moment throughout the day. Most of us feel like we don’t have time to do our hobbies but honestly If you have time to doomscroll you have time to read you are just choosing to spend that time on social media. Which is fine do what makes you happy but Booktokers choose to focus a large amounts of their time on reading and there’s really not much more to it 😭 also I’m done being a booktok creator for the most part but I did get lots of arcs and free books in 2024-25, unless something has dramatically changed booktokers don’t get paid shit unless they are doing an ad for an actual company. Authors don’t have the money to do this and the publishing industry thrives on the free marketing 😭😂

People could probably accuse me of this because my memory is crap. I can finish a book and forget the main characters names by tomorrow. 😂
