if you look higher than 40 degrees then your fall distance keeps increasing, with your fall damage

it's the momentum you're going too fast and you never looked up to slow it down when you looked down as you hit the block it made you take all the fall damage instead try looking up then even equipping your chest plate or stop flying when you know you won't die from the fall and you'll be fine

fall damage is based on height, before landing just aim up a bit so you move up a little then land
