@always_philistinie: In 1919, America asked the people of Palestine what they wanted. Then it buried the answer. At the Paris Peace Conference, Woodrow Wilson said every settlement had to rest on "the free acceptance of the people immediately concerned." So he sent a commission — Henry King, president of Oberlin College, and Charles Crane, a Chicago industrialist — to find out. They wrote that they began "with minds predisposed" in favor of Zionism. Then they spent six weeks on the ground and collected 1,863 petitions. On the Zionist program: 1,350 against, 11 for. In Palestine, they reported, nearly nine-tenths of the population was "emphatically against the entire Zionist program." In their own meetings, they wrote, the Zionists "looked forward to a practically complete dispossession of the present non-Jewish inhabitants of Palestine." Their warning to Washington was blunt: a Jewish state could be established "only by force." So these two sympathetic men recommended the project be scaled back and the commonwealth idea dropped. The report reached Paris in August 1919 — and vanished. The State Department said publishing it "would not be compatible with the public interest." Americans first read it on December 2, 1922, in a trade magazine, under the headline: "A Suppressed Official Document of the United States Government." By then the Mandate was sealed.
