When the MV Barima capsized on Saturday night, it was the instinct of veteran fishermen - led by Haresh Singh and his brother, Deonarine Singh - that made the difference. Drawing on years of experience in those waters, they were the ones who alerted the Coast Guard of the possible location of survivors, and they were among the first to recue some – eventually bringing ashore 11 people. On Monday, without any sophisticated or modern technology, again, they were first to locate the vessel's resting place on Monday by following a faint trail of oil - an extraordinary breakthrough that proved critical to the recovery effort. Their courage, experience and remarkable instincts transformed local fishermen into the eyes and ears of one of Guyana's largest maritime search efforts.
