Yasser Ghoreishi of Sudbury, Ontario, is a former Laurentian University adjunct professor and Ph.D. graduate whose convictions stem from the sexual exploitation of a woman who sought his mentorship while preparing to study in Canada. According to the courts, Ghoreishi abused his position of trust after meeting the victim in early 2020. During a visit to Sudbury, he sexually assaulted her in a hotel and secretly recorded the encounter without her consent. He later used the video to threaten and coerce her into additional sexual assaults. Court documents state Ghoreishi repeatedly booked hotel rooms in April and May 2020, forcing the victim to have sex by threatening to distribute the explicit recording. He also physically assaulted her, leaving bruises and slapping her when she attempted to leave. After she ended contact, he allegedly continued to blackmail and intimidate her with threats to release intimate images and videos. Following an appeal, the Ontario Court of Appeal upheld Ghoreishi’s sexual assault convictions, finding the trial judge correctly assessed the evidence of coercion and lack of consent.
