What kills me is that in the last 5 years I've seen a HEAVY decline in computer literacy yet we are seeing such a spike in AI use (usually poor AI use). They can't effectively use Google but AI? They rely so heavily on it because they genuinely do not know how to do it another way.

I'm neutral here and I agree you handled this well. I would have been one of the kids that not only copy and pasted but wouldn't have re-read it. And that failing grade alone would have been the best lesson I learned the entire year. I also wouldn't have had the audacity to contest it, knowing I was caught with my hand in the cookie jar.

Again- why in the WORLD cheat on an education you’re paying for?! It’s expensive! Why not intentionally soak in all that knowledge? What’s the point in getting into debt from student loans if you’re going to cheat? There isn’t a SINGLE reason I can come up with. College isn’t mandatory. Just choose to go to work instead of continuing your education. Seems simple to me.

Proofreading shouldn't be a new thing. I mean, not to sound like the opp, but proofreading is something AI is pretty good at. You write it you ask for feedback. That's a reasonable use case. But if the students aren't even reading the output, how have they gotten this far in their writing?
