Anthony Deku was one of the most powerful police officers in Ghana during the 1960s. As Deputy Inspector-General of Police, he served at the highest levels of the Ghana Police Service at a time when the country’s political landscape was becoming increasingly unstable. By the mid-1960s, Ghana was facing serious economic challenges, political tension, and growing opposition to President Kwame Nkrumah and his Convention People’s Party (CPP). While many Ghanaians remained loyal to Nkrumah, dissatisfaction had also grown within sections of the armed forces and the police. On 24 February 1966, while Nkrumah was on a diplomatic mission to China and North Vietnam, senior officers from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service carried out a coup d’état. Anthony Deku was among the leading police officers who participated in the operation alongside military commanders such as Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka and Akwasi Afrifa. Their coordinated action enabled the government to be overthrown with little organised resistance. After the coup, Anthony Deku became a member of the National Liberation Council, the military-police administration that ruled Ghana for more than three years. As the Council’s police representative, he played a role in overseeing national security and the transition to constitutional government. In 1969, the National Liberation Council handed power to the democratically elected government of Kofi Abrefa Busia. Anthony Deku thereafter stepped away from the centre of national politics and lived a relatively quiet life compared with many other figures associated with military governments. Anthony Deku died in 2015, but his place in Ghana’s history remains significant. To some, he was a key architect of the 1966 coup that ended Nkrumah’s presidency. To others, he remains a controversial figure whose actions changed the course of Ghana’s political development.
