I can tell who watched just the show and not read the book or just watched the show to pick a side because Cole is actually an extemely sympathetic character. Cole is a low-born noble from the Stormlands born to House Cole who stewards for House Dondarrion. After gaining valor in Dornish Marshes fighting Dornish raiders he is knighted by Lord Dondarrion and takes his vows seriously as a knight. He is then sponsored to fight in a tourney where he defeats both Harwin Strong and Daemon Targarayen and catches the eye of a young Rhaenyra who makes him her personal bodyguard and member of Kingsguard. After a night out with Daemon she is aroused and decides to basically force Cole to have sex with her. Most don’t see it that way but that is basically what she does. He can’t say no and tries to resist but if he says no he will receive consequences from heir to the throne if he says something to someone he will be called a liar and have his tongue cut out. It’s a lose lose. After laying with her he realizes he has broken his vows and that torments him. He asks her to run away and make an honest woman of her and she rejects him. Seeing no hope left and honor sullen he tries to kill himself until Alicent stops him. From that day he serves her and the Greens. He realizes he is just a pawn to these highborn families and learns to survive in this game of thrones best he can. He realizes there is no honor at the top that’s why during the Dance when he goes to fight and reveals his intentions to “die in service to himself. The realms greatest warrior.” It is a man taking back his agency and his dignity to die in his own way not in service to some house. He’s a deeply tragic character and represents anyone of low class who is hoisted up to serve the rich. You are a utility not a human to these people and they treat you as disposable.
