Quantum physics is one of the most fascinating and important branches of modern science. The origins of quantum physics date back to the early twentieth century. Before then, scientists believed that classical physics, developed by Isaac Newton, could explain almost everything about the natural world. However, experiments began to reveal behaviors that classical physics could not explain. In 1900, German physicist Max Planck proposed that energy is emitted in tiny packets called “quanta.” This idea marked the beginning of quantum theory. A few years later, Albert Einstein used Planck’s idea to explain the photoelectric effect, showing that light behaves as both a wave and a particle. These discoveries challenged long-held beliefs and opened the door to a completely new understanding of nature.
One of the most surprising ideas in quantum physics is wave-particle duality. In everyday life, we think of waves and particles as completely different things. Water waves move through the ocean, while particles such as grains of sand are solid objects. However, quantum physics shows that tiny particles, including electrons and photons, can behave as both waves and particles depending on how they are observed. This concept was demonstrated in the famous double-slit experiment, where particles created interference patterns like waves even when fired one at a time. This strange behavior suggests that the quantum world follows rules very different from those of the everyday world.
