I thought the same thing after my first watch. But I came to realization that the Athena pin basically fills out the same role as the olive tree bed in the book because Penelope says at the beginning of the movie that is how she will know if people are telling the truth about her husband so when this odysseus comes back to the palace and tells her about the details of the Athena pin, it means that she believes everything that Odysseus as the beggar was saying which means she didn’t even need to test him when he fully revealed himself at the end of the movie because she knew from that that it was him. So I guess that the olive tree bad wasn’t in the movie but the role that it played still is and I am at peace with that.

It was replaced with the Athena Pin, I think both do their duty well to the story, both are used to have Penelope be sure of his identity and his fidelity. I like both’s unique aspects too, the bed being rooted with the earth to symbolize their marriage, the pin being his reminder of home which he holds onto.

I think he definitely had to remove some stuff bc it would’ve been like 5 hours, and personally I think what he did works very well.

Yeah, he swapped it out with the Athena pin. A change to be sure, but served the same purpose.

This is why I try to avoid discourse about book adaptations, because people will nitpick EVERYTHING without first trying to understand why something was or was not in the movie to begin with

It wasn’t going to stay true. Come on now. Did we not learn from Troy (still one of the greatest movies)
