Graham's number, named after the mathematician Ronald Graham, is a large number that is an upper bound on the solution to a certain problem in Ramsey theory. This number gained some popular notoriety when Martin Gardner described it in the "Mathematical Games" section of Scientific American in November 1977: "In an unpublished proof, Graham has recently established… a bound so vast that it holds the record for being the largest number ever used in a serious mathematical proof." [1] The Guinness Book of World Records, in its 1980 edition, repeated Gardner's statement, further contributing to the number's widespread popularity. Graham's number is much larger than other well-known large numbers such as the googol, googolplex, googolduplex, and even Skewes' number and Moser's number. In fact, given the limitations of space and matter in our universe, it is impossible to denote Graham's number or a reasonable approximation of it in a conventional numbering system. Even if each digit occupied a Planck unit (the smallest possible unit of measurement), the entire universe would not be enough to represent it. Even "towers of exponents" of the form a^{b^{c^{\cdot ^{\cdot ^{\cdot }}}}} are not useful for this purpose, although the number can be described using recursive formulas with Knuth's arrow notation or equivalent formulas, as Graham did. The last ten digits of Graham's number are …2464195387. It is currently considered the largest mathematically represented number of all.
