🎹⚡ Ludwig van Beethoven – Sonata No. 14 "Moonlight", Op. 27 No. 2 — III. Presto agitato Valentina Lisitsa – piano solo 🎹 • Beethoven hated that the world only loved the first movement. He told Czerny: "I have certainly written better things." The Adagio became synonymous with piano. But the sonata wasn't written to end in silence — it was written to explode. The third movement is where Beethoven put everything that didn't fit in the delicacy: arpeggios at inhuman speed, sforzandos that cut, a coda with the weight of a concerto. Liszt called the second movement "a flower between two abysses." The first abyss is the Adagio. This is the second — and it's deeper. • The Presto agitato lasts about 6 minutes at full speed. There is no pause. There is no slow passage to breathe. The right hand fires ascending arpeggios while the left sustains rhythmic accents that forgive no delay. The tempo ranges between 168 and 200 BPM depending on the pianist — Lisitsa stays in the higher range. Charles Rosen wrote that the final movement was too grand for the pianos of Beethoven's time. On today's instruments, the resonance holds — but the fingers have to hold too. Most students who learn the Adagio never make it here. • Lisitsa recorded this performance in December 2009, at the Beethovensaal in Hannover. Fixed camera, framed on the hands, zero editing. It's the kind of recording that doesn't forgive — every hesitation would be visible. There are none. In 2007, her career had stalled. She posted her first video on YouTube and became the first classical pianist to go viral on the platform. Today she has over 300 million views. This recording of the Presto is the most watched video on her channel.
