I think the systems of social welfare and the worker’s protections in France and other European nations have emboldened employees to be nonchalant about their work ethic. In America, if you don’t provide exemplary customer service or you make a mistake at work, there is a larger risk of losing your job; and that keeps people scared.

European bureaucracy is what pushed me to move to the US 14 years ago. And it’s not just when interacting with the institutions of the state, that way of working leaks into the private sector as well. Try hiring contractors for a major remodeling project. I guarantee it will age you by a couple of years. For me personally that was the opposite of low friction. That’s why I admire the American efficiency and, for the large part, great customer service. Healthcare is a very polarizing topic but my experience has been great in terms of cost / quality ratio. As a high earner I’m actually spending a smaller percentage of my income on healthcare (insurance, copays etc.) for better services that I have faster access to compared to the situation I had in Europe. I understand that it’s a very privileged position and it’s far from a universal experience.

Omg we’re such sad europoors, how do we even cope guys? 😫 can more Americans come and visit the country of Europe and show us “how it’s done?” Maybe we’re just not giving it the good ol American try. Our continent lacks resilience and kindness and good food and non of us are friendly
