THE WNBA HAS A MARKETING PROBLEM (PART 4) The league's promotional strategy around top draft picks continues to completely miss the mark, and Azzi Fudd is the latest example of how badly the narrative is being fumbled. When Dallas took Azzi at No. 1 overall, the immediate online chatter was dominated by the idea that it was purely about pairing her with Paige Bueckers. The league obviously can't control Dallas's front office decisions, but they can control the narrative. It was the WNBA’s job to aggressively show the world why Azzi Fudd’s tape, mechanical touch, and scoring pedigree made her a legitimate, standalone No. 1 pick. Even now, with her advanced metrics putting together an incredible two-way rookie season, the league’s marketing would rather reduce her impact to winning a fun All-Star 3-Point contest. A 3-point trophy is a nice weekend storyline, but Azzi is an elite, franchise-altering talent who impacts winning on both ends of the floor. When the player drafted right behind her at No. 2… Olivia Miles… is firmly inserted into MVP conversations, failing to properly highlight Azzi's game only fuels lazy narratives.
