Our two porcupines at the sanctuary! Little Dude the African crested porcupine and Prickles the prehensile tailed porcupine! The African crested porcupine is a large, ground dwelling rodent native to Africa, covered in long, sharp quills that can reach over a foot in length and raised into a crest when threatened. It relies on its size and quills for defense and lives mainly on the ground, feeding on roots, tubers, and bark. In contrast, the prehensile-tailed porcupine is smaller, tree-dwelling, and native to Central and South America. Its quills are shorter and barbed, and it has a strong, grasping tail that functions almost like a fifth limb, allowing it to climb and hang securely among branches. While both are porcupines, they belong to entirely different families. The African crested to Hystricidae and the prehensile-tailed to Erethizontidae, so they are an example of convergent evolution, where similar defensive spines evolved independently on different continents. ~~If you would like to donate to the care of the sanctuary animals, we greatly appreciate any support!!
