19 years of being a burn survivor!! The other day, I realized something that stopped me in my tracks and that’s the fact that, I’ve lived longer with my scars than without them. The truth is, I don’t even know what it feels like to live without them anymore. They’ve become a part of me, so much so that I can’t separate who I am from the girl who survived. Accepting that wasn’t always easy. There were days I dreaded going to school because I was afraid of what people would say. I remember sitting alone after I returned to school, wondering if anyone would even want to be my friend. It wasn’t until one girl chose to sit beside me that things slowly began to change. There were days I cried. Days I asked, “Why me?” Days I wondered if anyone would ever see beyond my scars. For a long time, I didn’t dislike my scars because of how they looked, I disliked them because of how they made other people treat me. Somewhere along the way, something changed.I stopped waiting for everyone else to accept me before I accepted myself. Today, I wear my scars with a confidence I never thought I’d have. Not because every day is perfect, but because I’ve learned that my worth was never determined by my skin. These scars tell a story of survival, resilience, and God’s grace. Nineteen years later, I’m still here. Still growing. Still healing. Still choosing myself. If there’s one thing I hope anyone reading this takes away, it’s that the things that make you feel different today don’t have to stop you from becoming the person you’re meant to be.
