In December 2025, the San Diego City Council approved a $30 million settlement with the family of Konoa Wilson, a 16-year-old fatally shot by a police officer. This historic payout is considered one of the largest settlements for a police killing in U.S. history, surpassing the amount awarded to George Floyd's family.The fatal incident occurred on the night of January 28, when Wilson was running away from gunshots fired by another person at the Santa Fe train depot. As the teen ran out of a corridor onto Kettner Boulevard, he encountered San Diego Police Officer Daniel Gold, who was responding to the same gunfire. Officer Gold shot the 16-year-old twice in the back almost instantly.Wilson's parents subsequently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Officer Gold and the city. While the city council unanimously voted to approve the $30 million agreement in a closed session, San Diego officials maintained that the settlement was a business decision rather than an admission of liability. At the time of the settlement, Officer Gold remained on the police force in an administrative role pending an investigation by the county sheriff's department.
